Custom T-Shirts: Printed or Embroidered, and Why It Matters

Print vs embroidery on t-shirts

For t-shirts, print usually beats embroidery. The fabric is too thin for embroidery to sit flat without puckering, especially on the chest or sleeves. Print sits on the surface and looks crisp on cotton. Embroidery has its place — a small left-chest logo on a 200gsm heavyweight tee can look smart — but for any logo with detail, fine text, or photographic colour, print is the right call.

Three print methods we use:

  • Screen printing for runs of 25+ in 1–4 colours. Cheapest per unit at volume, brightest colours, longest lifespan.
  • DTF (direct-to-film) transfer for short runs and detailed/photographic designs. Excellent on dark fabrics. Lifespan with care is 40+ washes.
  • Vinyl transfer for simple names and numbers on sportswear and team shirts.

Cotton, polyester, or blend

For comfort and printability, cotton or polycotton beats polyester every time. Pure polyester is a specialist choice — wicking fabric for sport, or sublimation-printable for full-colour photo prints. For 90% of business t-shirts, ringspun cotton at 150–185gsm is the right answer. Gildan SoftStyle, Fruit of the Loom Iconic, and Russell Classic are the workhorses.

What good t-shirt printing actually costs

Plain cotton tee with a single-colour chest print: £4.99–£6.99 per shirt at 25+ quantity. Add a back print and you're at £6.99–£9.99. Full-colour DTF prints on darks: £7.99–£10.99 depending on print size. Setup is free; no hidden artwork charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the minimum order for printed t-shirts?
For screen printing, 25 is where the price drops sharply. For DTF transfer printing, we'll do as little as 1 — useful for sample shirts before a big run.
Will printed t-shirts fade in the wash?
Screen-printed shirts will look new at 60+ washes if washed inside out at 30°C without high heat tumble drying. DTF transfers last 30–50 washes treated the same way.
Can I have different names on the back of each shirt?
Yes — common for sports teams and event staff. We add names from a list you supply. Each name is around £3–£4 extra per shirt depending on quantity.
Do you do organic / sustainable t-shirts?
Yes — Stanley/Stella and Continental Clothing organic ranges are available. Slightly higher cost but proper Fair Wear and GOTS-certified supply chains.

Custom Embroidery & Printing on T-Shirts
Every product in our t-shirts range can be professionally customised at our Haverhill, Suffolk workshop:

Embroidery — Our most requested decoration method. Ideal for logos on chest, back, and sleeve positions. Creates a premium, hard-wearing finish that won’t fade, crack, or peel — even after hundreds of washes. From £1.80 per item on volume orders.
Screen printing — The most cost-effective option for orders of 25+ items. Produces bold, vibrant designs with excellent colour accuracy.
Transfer printing — Best for photographic images, gradients, and complex multi-colour artwork that embroidery can’t reproduce.
DTG (Direct to Garment) — Full-colour digital printing ideal for short runs, one-off designs, and unlimited colour detail without setup costs.

Everything is managed in-house — from initial logo digitisation and artwork preparation through to stitching, printing, quality inspection, and packing. You’ll receive a virtual proof by email for approval before we begin production, ensuring your branding appears exactly as intended. Our embroidery and print team has been producing professional decoration work since 2004, handling everything from single-item samples to 1,000+ piece production runs.

Custom t-shirt printing — common questions
How much does it cost to print a t-shirt?
The price per t-shirt depends on the garment and how many you order — bulk pricing is shown on each product, dropping the per-item cost as quantity increases. Printing and embroidery are charged per garment with no set-up fee on most designs.
Is there a minimum order?
No — there is no minimum order on plain garments, so you can order one printed t-shirt or thousands.
Can I design my own t-shirt?
Yes. Upload your logo or artwork and we will produce a free digital proof so you can approve exactly how it looks before we print.
Print or embroidery — which is best for t-shirts?
Printing suits full-colour or detailed designs and larger prints; embroidery gives a premium, hard-wearing finish for logos. We offer both in-house and can advise on the best option for your artwork.
How fast is delivery?
Standard turnaround is 5–7 working days, with free UK delivery on orders over £99.
Which t-shirt brands do you offer?
We print and embroider t-shirts from Gildan, Fruit of the Loom, AWDis, Stanley/Stella, Uneek and more.
