Hi-Vis Workwear: A Buyer’s Guide to Staying Safe and Compliant

Hi-vis workwear saves lives. That is not an exaggeration — high-visibility clothing is a legal requirement in many UK workplaces precisely because it dramatically reduces the risk of accidents where workers are near vehicles, machinery, or low-light conditions.

But navigating the different classes, standards, and garment types can be confusing, especially if you are ordering for the first time. This guide explains everything you need to know to buy the right hi-vis workwear for your team.

When is Hi-Vis Workwear Required?

Under UK health and safety law, employers must provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Hi-vis clothing is typically required in situations where workers need to be seen, including:

  • Construction sites and roadworks
  • Warehouses and distribution centres with moving vehicles
  • Railway and trackside work
  • Airport ground operations
  • Highway maintenance and roadside recovery
  • Refuse collection and street cleaning
  • Any environment where workers are near moving traffic or machinery

Even where hi-vis is not legally mandated, many businesses choose to use it for added safety — delivery drivers, landscapers, event marshals, and parking attendants all benefit from being more visible.

Understanding EN ISO 20471

The European standard EN ISO 20471 (which the UK continues to recognise post-Brexit) classifies hi-vis clothing into three classes based on the minimum area of visible material:

Class 1 — Lowest Visibility

Minimum 0.14m² of fluorescent background material and 0.10m² of retroreflective material. Class 1 garments are typically vests or waistcoats and provide the least coverage. They are suitable for low-risk environments where there is some separation from traffic — for example, car park attendants or warehouse workers in controlled environments.

Class 2 — Medium Visibility

Minimum 0.50m² of fluorescent material and 0.13m² of retroreflective material. Class 2 is the most common standard for general workwear. It covers garments like hi-vis polo shirts, t-shirts, and lightweight jackets. Suitable for most construction and warehouse environments.

Class 3 — Highest Visibility

Minimum 0.80m² of fluorescent material and 0.20m² of retroreflective material. Class 3 garments provide maximum visibility and are required for the highest-risk environments — working on or near public roads, railways, and airports. These are typically full jackets, coveralls, or combination outfits (e.g. a Class 2 jacket with Class 1 trousers achieving Class 3 overall).

Fluorescent Colours: Yellow, Orange, or Red?

The three standard fluorescent colours used in hi-vis workwear are:

  • Fluorescent yellow — The most common choice. Provides the best visibility in most daylight conditions and against most backgrounds. If in doubt, go with yellow.
  • Fluorescent orange — Can offer better contrast against green backgrounds (foliage, grass). Popular with railway workers, landscapers, and those working in rural environments.
  • Fluorescent red — Less common in the UK. Sometimes used to differentiate roles on site (e.g. supervisors in red, general workers in yellow).

All three colours meet the standard, so your choice is largely about the working environment and any colour-coding your site uses.

Types of Hi-Vis Garments

At Xceluk, we stock a comprehensive range of hi-vis workwear to suit every season and working condition:

Hi-Vis Vests and Waistcoats

The simplest and most affordable option. Lightweight, easy to put on and take off, and available in all three classes. Ideal as a supplementary layer over other clothing. Often used for visitors to construction sites or warehouses.

Hi-Vis Polo Shirts and T-Shirts

Comfortable for warm weather and indoor environments. Available in Class 2 and Class 3 options. A hi-vis polo with your embroidered logo is a practical, professional choice for summer months.

Hi-Vis Sweatshirts and Fleeces

Mid-layer warmth with full hi-vis compliance. These are popular for autumn and spring when a full jacket feels too heavy but a polo is not warm enough.

Hi-Vis Jackets and Coats

The workhorse of outdoor hi-vis workwear. Available in everything from lightweight softshells to heavily insulated parkas. Look for features like waterproof sealed seams, concealed hoods, and multiple pockets. Class 3 jackets are the standard for roadside and railway work.

Hi-Vis Trousers and Shorts

Often worn in combination with a hi-vis top to achieve an overall higher class. Combat-style hi-vis trousers with knee pad pockets are popular in construction. Hi-vis shorts are available for warm-weather work where your risk assessment permits them.

Adding Your Branding to Hi-Vis Workwear

You absolutely can add embroidery and printing to hi-vis garments, but there are some important rules to follow to maintain compliance:

  • Do not cover the reflective tape — The retroreflective strips must remain unobstructed. Logos should be placed on the fluorescent background area, not on or near the tape.
  • Respect the minimum areas — Your branding must not reduce the fluorescent or retroreflective area below the minimum required for the garment’s class.
  • Common logo positions — Left chest (most popular), right chest, upper back between the reflective strips, and sleeve are all typically safe positions. We will advise you on the best placement for your specific garment.

Caring for Hi-Vis Workwear

Hi-vis garments need proper care to maintain their protective properties:

  • Wash according to the garment label — typically 40°C or 60°C depending on the fabric.
  • Do not use bleach or fabric softener, as these can degrade the fluorescent properties over time.
  • Replace garments when the fluorescent colour fades noticeably or the reflective tape becomes damaged, delaminated, or less reflective.
  • Inspect hi-vis garments regularly, particularly for workers in high-risk environments.
