Choosing Custom Hoodies & Sweatshirts: What Actually Matters

Why hoodies are different from polos

Hoodies are bought differently from polos. People care about how the hoodie feels — the brushed-back lining, the weight of the fabric, the drape on the body. Embroidery decisions also change: the fabric is thicker, which means digitisation has to be tuned differently, and design placement matters more (small left-chest logos can get lost in heavy 320gsm fabric).

The two questions to answer before you order: indoor or outdoor wear? and uniform or merch? Indoor uniform hoodies are best at 280gsm; outdoor crew hoodies and merch hoodies are usually 320–350gsm. Anything below 240gsm is t-shirt weight with a hood on it — fine for festival merch, not for a logistics team.

Pullover, full-zip, or quarter-zip

Pullover hoodies are the cheapest and most common. They're the right choice for casual team wear, leavers hoodies, and merch.

Full-zip hoodies cost £2–£4 more but win for any team that wears them all day — easier on and off, doesn't mess up your hair, layers cleanly under jackets. Worth it for warehouse, hospitality, and corporate-casual teams.

Quarter-zip / 1/4-zip sweatshirts have become popular for corporate teams who want something smarter than a hoodie but still casual. They embroider beautifully and photograph well — useful if your team will be on the company website.

Embroidery placement and size limits

The default placement is left chest, 8cm x 8cm maximum. That's the safe bet for 90% of orders. Larger logos belong on the back — between 25cm and 30cm wide for a full back design. Front centre chest (10cm x 10cm) is the new alternative for streetwear-style branding; works well on heavier-weight pullover hoodies.

For very fine logos with thin text or small detail, we'll suggest a printed transfer over embroidery — fabric this thick can swallow detail under 4mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What weight hoodie should I order for an outdoor team?
For outdoor use in UK winters, 320gsm or heavier. The AWDis College Hoodie (280gsm) is too light for genuine cold; the AWDis Heavyweight or Russell Authentic 320gsm range is what most of our trades and logistics customers settle on.
Can you embroider a full back logo?
Yes — up to roughly 30cm x 30cm. Above that, transfer print becomes more practical (and cheaper). Send us your artwork and we'll advise.
Will embroidery on a hoodie crack like print?
No — embroidery is stitched into the fabric, so there's nothing on the surface to crack, fade, or peel. It's the most durable decoration method for hoodies.
Do you do leavers hoodies?
Yes — sports clubs, school years, university societies. We can do back-prints with names and "Class of 2026" style designs, plus embroidered front logos. Bulk discounts from 20+.
