Branded Workwear in the UK: An Honest Guide

What "workwear" actually means

"Workwear" is a catch-all that covers everything from a £4.99 cotton apron to a £180 flame-retardant coverall. To make sense of it for your business, start by separating uniform (smart, branded, identifies your team — polos, shirts, fleeces, gilets) from workwear proper (designed to take physical abuse — work trousers, coveralls, hi-vis, safety footwear, waterproofs).

Most teams need both. A landscaping company needs branded polos for the customer-facing side and rip-stop work trousers for the actual work. A café needs branded aprons and polos but no proper workwear. Knowing which category each role falls into stops you over- or under-spending.

The brands we recommend, and why

After two decades of orders, a short list of brands consistently deliver:

  • Portwest — the broadest reliable range in UK workwear. Their Texo Sport hi-vis polos and PW3 winter range are our most-ordered items.
  • Regatta Professional — excellent on softshells, fleeces, and waterproof workwear. The TRA300 fleece and TRA200 softshell are workwear-shop staples.
  • Russell / Russell Collection — best for corporate shirts, smart polos, and easy-iron blouses where appearance matters.
  • Fruit of the Loom — the budget option that still holds up. Right for promotional tees, casual hoodies, and sportswear.
  • Uneek — solid all-rounder, particularly strong on hoodies and zip-throughs at mid-market prices.
  • Beeswift — the cheap-and-cheerful workwear brand. Their basic hi-vis vest is the lowest-cost legitimately-certified option in the UK.

How to spec a workwear package

A practical workwear package for a 10-person trade team usually looks like this: 2 hi-vis vests per person (rotate while one's in the wash), 2 work polos, 1 fleece, 1 softshell, 1 hi-vis jacket, 2 pairs of work trousers. Branded with your logo across all visible garments. Total cost per person around £140–£200 depending on brand choice. That kit covers a UK working year top-to-tail.

For office-based teams: 3 embroidered polos and 1 quarter-zip or fleece per person. Around £40–£70 per person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order different garments for different team members?
Yes — most of our orders are mixed sizes, garments, and even brands. Just send the list (item, brand, size, name if you want it personalised) and we'll build the order.
Do you supply samples before a big order?
Yes. We send out plain samples for sizing and fabric check on most orders over 50 pieces. The samples come back to us before production.
What's the cheapest way to brand workwear?
Heat transfer print is the cheapest decoration method for short runs (under 20 pieces). Embroidery becomes more cost-effective from 20+ pieces. Screen printing is the cheapest at 50+. We'll always quote the cheapest method that delivers the look you want.
Do you offer credit accounts for businesses?
Yes — 30-day credit accounts for established UK businesses subject to references. Email sales@xceluk.com to set one up.
