Branded Hi-Vis Workwear: EN ISO 20471, Choosing Class, and What's Legal
What EN ISO 20471 actually means
EN ISO 20471 is the European standard that replaced EN 471 in 2013. It dictates how much fluorescent fabric and how much reflective tape a garment must carry to legally count as "high visibility." Three classes:
- Class 1 — minimum visibility. Hi-vis braces, gilets without sleeves. Legal for environments where the wearer isn't exposed to traffic. Not enough for roadside or rail.
- Class 2 — mid-range. Standard hi-vis vests and tabards. Suitable for warehouses, sites away from public traffic, and most contractor work.
- Class 3 — maximum. Long-sleeved jackets and full coveralls with sleeve and trouser banding. Mandatory for road, rail, and any night work near vehicles. If your team is on a motorway verge, this is what they wear.
Two-piece combinations matter: if you wear a Class 2 vest with Class 1 trousers, you collectively meet Class 3 requirements. That's how most road crews are kitted.
Embroidering hi-vis without breaking the certification
This is where suppliers cut corners. Embroidering across reflective tape voids the EN ISO 20471 certification for that garment, because you've damaged the reflective surface. Legitimately certified branded hi-vis must have its logo placed on fluorescent fabric only — not on the silver tape.
We position embroidery on the chest panel or shoulder zone where reflective banding doesn't cross. If your logo is too large to fit cleanly, we'll suggest a heat-applied reflective transfer instead, which doesn't damage existing tape.
Bottom line: any embroidery on hi-vis should still photograph as a fully-banded garment. Ask your supplier to show you placement before they stitch.
Brands worth your money
For day-to-day work hi-vis, Portwest is the trade default — broad range, consistent fit, good price-quality balance. Yoko is the budget brand that doesn't feel budget; their HVS150 vest has been in continuous production for 15+ years for a reason. Beeswift sits between the two. For genuinely heavy-duty use — utility crews, rail, offshore — look at Portwest PW3 or Helly Hansen Workwear.
