Branded T-Shirts for Your Business: A Practical Guide
Last reviewed: 28 August 2026 · Written and reviewed by the Xcel Print & Promotions team
Branded t-shirts are one of the most cost-effective ways to give your business a professional, consistent look. Choose the right fabric weight and decoration method, get the artwork right before you order, and you’ll have garments your team will actually want to wear, and that customers will notice. The key decisions are: fabric weight, how you want your logo applied (embroidery or printing), and whether you need a true workwear grade or a smart casual style.
Why branded t-shirts are worth the investment for small businesses
We kit out a huge range of businesses from our workshop in Haverhill, trades teams, hospitality staff, market traders, sports clubs, care workers, school support staff. One thing they all have in common: the moment a team switches to branded clothing, they look more credible. It sounds simple because it is. A matching t-shirt with your logo on the chest tells a customer that the person in front of them is accountable to a business, not just someone who turned up.
Beyond first impressions, branded t-shirts do quiet, ongoing marketing work. A plasterer’s crew on a housing estate, a barista serving 200 coffees a day, a support worker walking through a care home, every one of them is a moving advert. You’ve already paid for their time; the t-shirt just makes that time work a little harder.
And unlike many forms of marketing, branded clothing has a tangible lifespan. A well-made, properly decorated t-shirt that’s washed and worn regularly can last a season or two before it needs replacing, which means your cost per impression is very low indeed.
What fabric weight should you choose for a business t-shirt?
This is the question we answer most often, and the answer depends on how the shirt will be used.
- Lightweight (around 140-160 gsm): Breathable and comfortable in warm environments, kitchens, outdoor events in summer, sports. Less durable with heavy daily washing; colours can fade faster.
- Midweight (around 180-200 gsm): The sweet spot for most businesses. Holds its shape, takes decoration well, and survives a commercial laundry cycle far better than lightweight alternatives. This is what we recommend for trades, retail and hospitality teams as a starting point.
- Heavyweight (200 gsm+): Feels premium, drapes well, and is less prone to going see-through or misshaping. Great for corporate events, customer-facing roles, or when you want the garment to double as smart casual wear.
Brands like Uneek and Regatta, both of which we stock, offer solid midweight options that balance cost and durability well. If your team works in construction or a similarly demanding environment, it’s also worth considering whether a dedicated workers’ clothing range might suit better than a standard t-shirt.
Embroidery or printing, which is right for branded t-shirts?
This is the most important decision you’ll make, and both options have genuine strengths. We do both in-house, so we have no agenda either way, here’s the honest version.
Embroidery
Embroidery stitches your logo directly into the fabric. It looks sharp, feels premium, and is essentially permanent, it won’t crack, peel or fade the way some printed designs can over time. It’s the go-to for chest logos, polo shirts, and any garment where a professional, corporate finish matters. The limitation is detail: very fine text, thin lines, and photographic or gradient artwork don’t translate well into thread. If your logo has lots of intricate detail, it will need to be simplified slightly for embroidery.

Printing
Printing handles colour, complexity and large back prints far better than embroidery. If you want a full-colour graphic, a slogan across the back, or a design that covers a large area of the garment, printing is usually the right call. It’s also often more economical for bold, simple designs in high volumes. The trade-off is longevity: print durability depends on garment care, washing inside-out on a cool cycle makes a meaningful difference.
You can see our printing services for more detail on what we can produce.
When to use both
It’s not uncommon to combine the two, an embroidered chest logo for the professional finish, and a printed back graphic for brand messaging or a campaign design. We can advise on this when you get in touch.
Do you need a minimum order quantity?
One of the most common worries we hear from small businesses is: “I only need eight shirts, is that going to be a problem?” At Xcel, we have no minimum order. Whether you need two shirts for a market stall or two hundred for a full hospitality team rollout, we treat the job the same way.
That said, it’s worth being aware that setup and artwork costs are the same regardless of quantity, so the per-shirt cost does come down as your order size increases. If you’re ordering for the first time, it often makes sense to order a few extras as spares, replacing a single shirt later costs proportionally more than ordering them with your main run.
A worked example: kitting out a small trades team
Imagine you run a four-person plumbing firm. You want the team in matching t-shirts with your company name and logo on the chest, plus a phone number on the back. Here’s how we’d typically approach it:
- Garment: A midweight t-shirt in your company colour, something that doesn’t show grime too quickly but still looks presentable at the door.
- Chest decoration: Embroidery. A small, clean chest logo in thread looks professional and lasts as long as the shirt does.
- Back decoration: Printing. Your trading name and number in a clear, readable font across the upper back, this is a practical marketing tool every time your team is on a job.
- Quantity: Two per person (one on, one in the wash) plus two spares, ten shirts total.
- Artwork: Send us your logo file. If you only have a low-resolution version, our in-house design team can help, see our design service.
This kind of order is exactly what we handle every week. It’s not complicated, but getting the detail right at the start, artwork quality, colour matching, size splits, saves time and disappointment later. If you’re unsure, drop us a message before you order.
What do branded business t-shirts cost in the UK?
Prices vary depending on garment brand, fabric weight, decoration type, and quantity. As a general guide, a decorated midweight t-shirt with a single embroidered or printed logo typically falls somewhere in the range of £8-£20 per shirt at small-to-medium quantities, though this is a rough indicator only, your actual quote will depend on your specific artwork and requirements. Premium garment brands and more complex decoration will sit toward the higher end.
The honest advice: don’t make fabric weight or garment quality the place you cut costs. A t-shirt that shrinks, fades or loses its shape after ten washes reflects poorly on your business and costs you more in replacements. Pay a little more for a garment you’d be comfortable handing to a customer-facing member of staff.
Who are branded t-shirts NOT right for?
It’s worth being honest here. If your team works in an environment that requires flame-resistant, high-visibility or arc-flash rated clothing, a standard branded t-shirt won’t meet your compliance requirements. In that case, look at our hi-vis/">custom hi-vis range or speak to us about certified workwear. Similarly, if the primary need is warmth and layering, a hoodies/">personalised hoodie or fleece might serve the team better.
And if budget is extremely tight and you’re tempted by the cheapest possible garments, know that very lightweight, low-cost t-shirts often look fine on arrival and poor after a month of wear. The value equation rarely works out in the long run.
