Custom sportswear for clubs and teams means branded training kit, playing shirts, hoodies or jackets decorated with your crest, sponsor logo or player names, available from specialist UK suppliers with no minimum order, in-house embroidery and printing, and typical lead times of 7-10 working days. The right supplier will handle everything from a single hoodie to a full squad kit, and the garment choice matters far more than most clubs realise.

Whether you’re running a Sunday league football side, a junior gymnastics club, a corporate netball team or a CrossFit box, the challenge is always the same: you need kit that looks professional, survives weekly training sessions and doesn’t cost a fortune to replace when someone inevitably leaves it on the bus. This guide will walk you through every decision you need to make, honestly, without the sales fluff.

What garments actually work for club sportswear?

The honest answer is that it depends on your sport, but there are some universal truths we’ve learned from kitting out teams across the UK in our Haverhill workshop.

Polyester or poly-blend performance fabric is the go-to for active training and match kit. It wicks moisture, keeps its colour through heavy washing and holds printed decoration well. Pure cotton feels great on the first day but tends to shrink, fade and go misshapen faster than you want when it’s going through the wash two or three times a week.

Hoodies and zip-throughs are arguably the most popular team garment we do, pre-match warm-ups, post-training wind-downs, travel days. A good midweight fleece-lined hoodie from a brand like Uneek or Regatta will outlast plenty of lighter alternatives. Our personalised hoodies are a regular order for football clubs, rugby sides and athletics groups who want something smart on the touchline without spending a fortune.

T-shirts work brilliantly for summer training, charity events and casual training days. A 180-200gsm cotton or poly-cotton tee is the sweet spot for most clubs. See our range of custom T-shirts for a feel of what’s possible.

hi-vis vests deserve a mention here too, junior clubs running road races, cycling clubs, outdoor fitness groups and park run volunteers all need them. If you need 25 or more printed vests with your club logo, our bundle deals on printed hi-vis vests are very hard to beat. Packs of 25, 50, 100 or 250 vests with the logo included at a fixed price take the faff out of budgeting. You can also browse our full hi-vis clothing range if you need something more substantial than a vest.

Embroidery or printing, which is right for team kit?

This is the question we get asked most often, and the answer genuinely depends on what you’re decorating and where it’s going.

When embroidery wins

  • Club crests and badge-style logos, embroidery gives a premium, official feel that printed logos simply can’t replicate on a chest badge position.
  • Hoodies, fleeces and jackets, stitched decoration holds up to sustained heavy use and washing far better than printing on a thick, textured surface.
  • Corporate or presentation kit, if your team is meeting sponsors or wearing kit at an awards night, embroidery reads as higher quality.

Our embroidered workwear page gives a clear view of what’s possible, and logo digitising is always free, so there’s no hidden setup cost.

When printing wins

  • Back-of-shirt numbers and player names, large text and numbers are almost always printed. Embroidering a full surname across a back panel would be impractical and expensive.
  • Full-colour complex designs, if your logo has photographic gradients or lots of colours, printing handles it more faithfully than embroidery.
  • T-shirts and lightweight training tops, printing sits flatter on thinner fabrics and is often the better-looking result.
  • Hi-vis vests, always printed. Embroidery on hi-vis material doesn’t work and isn’t recommended. See our custom hi-vis page for details.

Many clubs do both: an embroidered crest on the chest and a printed sponsor logo or squad number on the back. We handle that combination regularly in-house, which keeps quality consistent and turnaround tighter than going to two separate suppliers.

How many do you need, and what will it cost?

One of the most important things to know about Xcel is that we have no minimum order. That matters for clubs. You might need 18 hoodies for your first-team squad, three spares for the manager and coaches, and one for a new signing who joins mid-season. You shouldn’t have to order in batches of 50 to make the economics work.

On cost: without quoting specific prices (which vary by garment, decoration type and quantity), the honest framing is this, a decorated team hoodie from a quality brand will cost more than a plain high-street one, and it should. You’re paying for the garment quality, the decoration, and the fact that it represents your club properly. As a rough guide, per-unit costs fall noticeably as quantities increase, so ordering the full squad in one go almost always makes more financial sense than drip-feeding individual orders.

Delivery is £5.95 + VAT, or free on orders over £99 ex VAT. Logo digitising for embroidery is free.

A worked example: kitting out a 25-person running club

Here’s how a typical club order might come together in practice. A local running club wants branded kit for their members ahead of a half-marathon season. They settle on:

  • 25 printed performance T-shirts with the club name and logo across the chest
  • 25 printed hi-vis vests for road training, ordered as part of a bundle deal
  • 10 embroidered zip-through hoodies for committee members and coaches

They send over their logo as a high-res PNG (over 1000px). We convert the embroidery version to a stitch file at no charge and set up the print version alongside it. The T-shirts and hi-vis vests are printed; the hoodies are embroidered. Everything goes out in a single dispatch. Lead times for customised items are 7-10 working days and vary with demand, for a club with a race date in the diary, getting the order in at least two weeks ahead is good practice.

What artwork do clubs need to provide?

This is where orders get delayed, and it’s worth being straight about it. The best thing you can send is a vector file, AI, EPS, SVG or PDF format. These scale to any size without quality loss and make the decoration process straightforward. If you don’t have a vector file, a high-resolution PNG at 1000px or wider on a transparent background is the next best option.

A JPEG pulled from a website, a screenshot from a phone, or a logo embedded in a Word document will cause problems. We can’t redraw or recreate artwork, if the file quality isn’t there, the honest advice is to go back to whoever designed your crest and ask for the original vector file. Most designers keep them and can email it over quickly.

Who is custom club sportswear NOT right for?

It’s worth being honest here. If you need kit for a one-off event this Friday, custom decorated sportswear isn’t realistic, lead times for customised items are 7-10 working days and vary with demand, and there are no shortcuts that maintain quality. Plain stock ships faster if you genuinely need something in days rather than weeks.

If your club only needs one or two items per year and isn’t fussed about a consistent branded look, the per-unit cost at very low quantities may feel steep compared to a plain garment. That said, with no minimum order, it’s at least possible, and worth a conversation.

How to get started

The simplest route is to visit our personalised workwear pages, browse the garment ranges, and get a feel for what suits your sport and budget. If you know what you want, you can contact us directly with your garment choice, quantities, and artwork, and we’ll come back to you quickly with a quote and any questions.

We’ve been doing this for over 20 years, everything goes through our in-house embroidery and print operation, and we work with clubs of all sizes. There’s no pressure and no upsell, just straightforward advice on what will actually work for your team.

FAQs

Is there a minimum order for custom club sportswear?

No, Xcel Print & Promotions has no minimum order, so you can order a single personalised hoodie or a full squad of 50 printed training tops. Per-unit costs do fall with larger quantities, so ordering the whole squad at once usually makes better financial sense.

How long does custom sportswear take to deliver in the UK?

Lead times for customised items are 7-10 working days and vary with demand. Plain undecorated stock ships faster. If you have a specific event or match day, it's wise to order at least two full weeks in advance to be safe.

Should I choose embroidery or printing for my club crest?

It depends on the garment and position. Chest crests on hoodies, jackets and heavier garments almost always look better embroidered, it gives a premium, badge-quality finish. For player names, back numbers, or full-colour designs on lightweight training tops and hi-vis, printing is usually the better choice. Many clubs use both on the same garment.

What file format should I send for my club logo?

The best format is a vector file, AI, EPS, SVG or PDF. If you don't have one, a high-resolution PNG at 1000px or wider on a transparent background is the next best option. Avoid JPEGs, screenshots or logos embedded in Word documents, as these typically aren't suitable for quality decoration.

Is there a good deal on hi-vis vests for clubs and outdoor groups?

Yes, Xcel offers bundle deals on printed hi-vis vests in packs of 25, 50, 100 or 250, with the logo included at a fixed price. These are popular with junior clubs, cycling groups, running clubs and park fitness groups who need consistent branded visibility kit in bulk.

Does logo digitising for embroidery cost extra?

No, logo digitising (converting your artwork into an embroidery stitch file) is always free at Xcel Print & Promotions. There's no setup fee for this, which is worth checking with any supplier you're comparing against.
