Printed hi-vis vests with your logo are one of the fastest, most affordable ways to brand a working team on site. A good print holds up to outdoor conditions, keeps your crew visible and identifiable, and, ordered in the right quantity, costs far less per vest than most people expect. The key is getting your artwork, fabric choice and order size right before you commit.

Whether you’re kitting out a two-person landscaping duo or a site crew of 150, the questions we hear most often at Xcel are the same: Will the print last? What artwork do I need to send? Can I mix sizes? This guide answers all of them, honestly, from the hands-on experience of printing branded hi-vis gear from our Haverhill workshop every week.

Why print rather than embroider hi-vis vests?

Both decoration methods have a place on workwear, but hi-vis vests are one situation where printing is usually the smarter call. Here’s why.

  • Reflective tape gets in the way of a hoop. Embroidery requires the garment to be hooped flat, and the tape bands on a standard vest sit right where a large chest logo would go. Printing works flat across the surface without interfering with the tape.
  • Large logos are cheaper to print. A bold, readable logo across the back of a vest, the kind a driver or pedestrian sees at fifty metres, costs significantly less to print than to embroider at that scale.
  • Speed on high volumes. If you need 50 or 100 vests for a single job or contract start date, printing scales up quickly. Our bundle deals on printed hi-vis vests, available in packs of 25, 50, 100 and 250, are priced with the logo print already included, which removes the guesswork.

That said, if you want a small embroidered logo on a hi-vis jacket or softshell rather than a vest, embroidered workwear is absolutely the right choice. Jackets have more flat, tape-free panel space to work with.

What makes a good hi-vis vest for printing?

Not all hi-vis vests are equal, and the fabric affects how well a print bonds and lasts. From what we see come through our workshop, the vests that give the sharpest, most durable results share a few traits.

  • Polyester mesh or solid polyester shell. These are the standard fabrics for EN ISO 20471 compliant vests. They accept a print cleanly and hold colour well under UV and repeated wear.
  • Yellow or orange ground colour. Bright ground colours are required for Class 2 compliance, but they also give your printed logo contrast, dark navy or black ink reads clearly against both.
  • Velcro or zip fastening at the side or front. This doesn’t affect the print directly, but a well-fitted vest stays put, which matters for legibility of a back print when someone is moving.

Brands like Portwest and Beeswift, which we stock, have a solid reputation on site precisely because the fabric weight and construction are consistent batch to batch. That consistency is actually important for print quality: a vest that varies in weave tension between sizes will produce slightly different results. Buying from a trusted brand removes that variable.

For teams that need compliant, branded custom hi-vis clothing beyond just vests, including jackets, trousers and bomber styles, we carry a broader range to suit different site requirements.

Where should your logo go on a hi-vis vest?

The two most common positions are the left chest and the full back. Here’s an honest breakdown of each.

Left chest print

A chest logo is subtle and professional, good for customer-facing roles where you want branding without shouting. On a hi-vis vest, the available print area is limited by the reflective tape running across the chest, so keep artwork compact (roughly postcard-sized or smaller) and legible at arm’s length. A clean wordmark or a simple logo mark works best here. A busy design with small type will not read well.

Full back print

This is where hi-vis branding earns its money. A large back print, your company name, logo, and optionally a phone number or URL, is visible from a distance and turns every vest into a moving advertisement. This is the position we’d almost always recommend as the primary decoration for trades working in public: landscapers, groundworkers, utility teams, event crew. Keep the design to two or three elements maximum. If someone can’t read it in two seconds from five metres away, simplify it.

You can combine both positions, chest and back, for maximum impact. This is common on our bundle deal vests and doesn’t significantly change the lead time.

What artwork do I need to send?

This is the question that causes the most friction in orders, so let’s be direct. For the cleanest print result, send a vector file, AI, EPS, SVG or PDF formats. Vector artwork can be scaled to any size without losing sharpness, which matters when we’re sizing a logo to fit a full back panel.

If you don’t have a vector file, a high-resolution PNG at 1000 pixels or more across its longest dimension, with a transparent background, will usually work for simpler logos. A low-res PNG pulled from a website or business card scan will not produce a clean edge on print, if that’s all you have, speak to your original designer about getting a proper export.

Logo digitising for embroidery is free with your order. For printed hi-vis vests, once we confirm your artwork is print-ready, we’ll send a digital proof for your approval before anything goes to press. You don’t pay until you’re happy with the proof.

A worked example: kitting out a groundworks crew

Here’s how a typical order comes together for a small trades business, the kind of scenario we handle regularly.

A groundworks contractor needs branded vests for a new highway maintenance contract starting in three weeks. They have a crew of 14, but want spares for new starters and replacements, so they order 25 vests. They send us an EPS logo file, their name in bold type above a simple graphic mark, and specify a full back print in black plus a left chest logo. We send a digital proof within a couple of working days; they approve it and the order goes into production.

Lead times for customised items are 7-10 working days and vary with demand. Plain stock ships faster. In this case, the vests arrive with a few days to spare before the contract starts. Each vest is EN ISO 20471 Class 2 compliant, the print is clean and flat, and the crew look like they belong on a professional site, not a mixed bag of random gear.

For a job like this, our printed hi-vis vest bundle deals (packs of 25, 50, 100 or 250 with logo print included) are almost always the most cost-effective route. Fixed price, no hidden setup fees, logo included.

What about larger teams and mixed clothing orders?

Many of our customers don’t just need hi-vis vests, they need a full uniform that works across different roles. A construction site might need hi-vis vests for groundworkers, hoodies/">personalised hoodies for supervisors, and custom printed T-shirts for summer site wear. We handle all of that from one place, with consistent logo treatment across every garment.

If you’re building out a broader work uniform rather than just reordering vests, it’s worth thinking about decoration consistency: the same logo colour, same position logic, same size proportions across garment types. That consistency is what makes a team look genuinely professional rather than just wearing matching colours.

We also offer a wider range of personalised workwear beyond hi-vis, fleeces, polo shirts, softshells and more, if your team works in environments where high-visibility isn’t mandatory but smart branded clothing still matters.

Who is this not for?

Printed hi-vis vests are not the right product if your workplace requires a higher class of protection (Class 3 garments are typically full-coverage clothing, not vests), if your team works in environments where a printed surface might degrade quickly due to chemical exposure, or if you need a single vest for personal use. Our minimum order is genuinely no minimum, you can order one, but the per-unit cost on a single custom vest is higher than on a bundle, so if you only need one or two, it’s worth weighing up the value honestly.

FAQs

Can I get just a few printed hi-vis vests, or is there a minimum order?

There is no minimum order at Xcel Print & Promotions. You can order a single printed hi-vis vest if you need to. That said, the per-unit cost comes down significantly on larger quantities, so our bundle deals at 25, 50, 100 or 250 vests, with logo print included at a fixed price, offer much better value for teams.

How long does it take to get printed hi-vis vests delivered?

Lead times for customised items are 7-10 working days and vary with demand. Plain stock ships faster. If you have a firm deadline, get in touch before ordering so we can confirm availability.

What file format should I send for my logo?

The best formats for print are vector files: AI, EPS, SVG or PDF. These scale to any size without losing quality. If you only have a raster file, send a high-resolution PNG at 1000 pixels or more across its longest dimension, with a transparent background where possible. Avoid sending logos exported from websites or small JPEG files, they won't produce a clean edge on print.

Are your printed hi-vis vests EN ISO 20471 compliant?

Yes. The hi-vis vests we supply from brands like Portwest and Beeswift are EN ISO 20471 compliant. Always check the class rating against your specific site or job requirements, Class 2 is the standard for most highway and construction work, while some roles require Class 3.

Will the printed logo hold up to outdoor use and washing?

Yes, when the garment is cared for properly. Printing on polyester hi-vis fabric produces a durable result that holds up to regular outdoor use and washing at the temperatures recommended on the care label. Avoid tumble drying at high heat and do not iron directly over a printed area. Following the care instructions is the single biggest factor in how long any decoration lasts.

Can I have my logo on the back and the front of the vest?

Yes. The most common combination is a full back print, company name and logo for distance visibility, plus a smaller left chest print. You can specify both positions when you order. This is a popular choice on our bundle deal vests and doesn't significantly change the turnaround time.
